Worms

A new technical challenge

After nearly fifty years of activity, we decided to take on a new technical challenge: producing gears.

Worms are shafts with helical teeth, designed to pair with a crown gear, allowing for motion transmission between axes arranged at right angles.

PSF precision rolling on tailstocks allows for the plastic forming of the steel shaft’s surface, creating the teeth according to the module and parameters that define them.

This process serves as an alternative to traditional cutting methods. Thanks to the integration of internal research, latest-generation CNC rolling machines, and high-quality rolling tools, we are able to achieve excellent results, even without subsequent grinding.

The products obtained through pure rolling forming are the ideal solution for applications that require medium-quality standards, where cost optimization is essential without compromising the functional reliability of the system.

For applications requiring high-quality standards, rolling forming is a precursor to grinding, but still more economical than material removal processes.

At Montesi, we have established a dedicated technical team focused on the study, feasibility assessment, and development of rolled worm screws, with the goal of offering a technologically advanced alternative to traditional components produced through cutting.

Advantages of the rolling process:

  • Improved surface roughness of the ground products.
  • Cost-effectiveness of the process, leading to savings on grinding operations.
  • No need for thermal treatment due to the hardening of the teeth from the plastic deformation process.
  • Significantly lower costs compared to cutting processes.

Limitations and Alternatives

  • Non-ground rolled worms are not indicated for applications that require maximum quality.
  • The maximum module achievable through rolling is between 3 and 3.5.

Alternative solutions with removal teeth

When dimensional or functional characteristics cannot be achieved with the rolling process, we offer toothing by removal with the following options:

  • Turning process performed at Montesi.
  • Milling performed at partner companies.
